Ms. Matxalen Sanchez Aranzamendi works at the European Space Operations Center (ESOC) of the European Space Agency in Darmstadt since 2012.
She has previously been an Associate Fellow of the European Space Policy Institue (ESPI) based in Brussels. Before, she has worked as Resident Fellow for Space Legislation and Regulations from 2008 to 2011 at the ESPI seat in Vienna.
Since joining ESPI she has authored two studies on the effects of National Space Legislation and of Space Regulations on the development of commercial space activities in Europe and has coedited two ESPI Reports on Third Party Liability for GNSS in Europe and legal Issues of Remote Sensing. In addition she has published conference proceedings and articles in the German Journal of Air and Space Law (ZLW) and International Institute of Space Law (IISL) Colloquia proceedings.
Matxalen Sánchez Aranzamendi is member of the International Institute of Space Law (IISL) since 2010. She has delivered guest lectures on National Space Legislation at Leiden University, SIOI Rome and the ECSL summer course 2010 in Jaen and has participated as speaker in international conferences such as the IISL-ECSL Symposium at the UNCOPUOS Legal Subcommittee in 2010, the EU Council Presidency conference on space governance in 2010 in La Granja or the IAC 2010 in Prague. She has also provided advice in National Space Legislation drafting processes. i.e. the Austrian National Space Legislation and the draft of a proposal for the ILA Model Law for National Space Legislation.
Previously she had been an intern at the European Commission Directorate for Space Policy, GMES and Security (2007-2008) and had worked as Junior Policy Adviser at the Basque Delegation in Brussels.
Matxalen Sánchez Aranzamendi is a graduate from Leiden University (the Netherlands) and Deusto University (Spain) where she obtained her Advanced LLM degree in European Business Law and her degree in Law and Economics respectively.
