Dr. Bernhard Schmidt-Tedd is Head of Legal Support for Agency Affairs of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). He lectures space law at the Institute of Space Systems, University of Stuttgart, Germany; and mentors practice-oriented doctoral theses in cooperation with the Institute of Air and Space Law, University of Cologne, Germany.
Bernhard Schmidt-Tedd completed his law studies in Cologne, Germany and Geneva, Switzerland. He holds a doctorate in law from the University of Cologne, Germany. Having begun his career at the Foreign Business Department of Gothaer Insurance, he joined the German Aerospace Center in 1987. In the latter capacity he was involved in contract negotiations of international space programmes, including the Spacelab / MIR missions. From 1989 to 1990, Bernhard Schmidt-Tedd acted as special assistant to the Chairman of the DLR Executive Board. Subsequently, he founded the Business Strategy division of DLR, leaving it in 1993 to head the Administrative division of the Management Department.
A Corresponding Member of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) and the Russian Academy for Cosmonautics, Bernhard Schmidt-Tedd is also a member of the International Institute of Space Law (IISL), the European Centre of Space Law (ECSL) and the German Society for Aeronautics and Astronautics (DGLR). He sits on the editorial board of the German Journal of Air and Space Law (Zeitschrift für Luft- und Weltraumrecht – ZLW), and is a published author of more than 50 articles on legal developments in space law, in particular on contractual space matters, national space legislation, data policy and commercial space applications. He co-authored the book “Grundzüge des Raumfahrtrechts” (2002: Beck Juristischer Verlag / Munich).
Dr. Bernhard Schmidt-Tedd is also the author of the chapter on Article VIII of the Outer Space Treaty (Volume I), of the part on the Registration Convention (Volume II) and of the part on the Registration Practice Resolution (Volume III).
